Purley on Thames CC Lost

Match report MIDWEEK TEAM SCHOCK DEFEAT IN SKIPPER’S ABSENCE

The game got off to a bad start when it emerged that in captain Gary Brooker’s non-appearance there was no scorebook and no match ball. Thankfully, Chris Rackley and George Wheeler (mars bar ice cream in hand) set off to retrieve the book from Gary.he was eventually found in pangbourne propping up the bar in the cross keys claiming an injury . there is to be an emergency committee meeting on Tuesday of next week where top of the agenda is gary brookers absence which could result in the skipper being fired . Ramesh then produced a ball from his bag to ensure that the game could get underway.

After winning the toss and consulting his team, stand in skipper Mark Nash elected to bat. The Purley innings got off to a bad start when Rackley was caught behind for 0 after stepping up to take the first ball of the game as George Wheeler bottled the opportunity. Khan Azad was then sent in but only managed 8 before Wheeler was comically run out and ended up lying on the ground in the middle of the wicket. Some middle order resistance from captain Nash, Ramesh Patel and Julian Fernando who all got above 20 was not enough as the top and lower order failed to add many to the total. Purley finished on 107 which was probably 10 or 20 short on the wicket.

Mark Nash then opened the bowling and bowled economically (1-23) from his four overs. Khan Azad struck early dismissing the first Foster Wheeler batsman with the score at just 3. The opening bowlers took three early wickets and put Purley in a commanding position but some lower order swinging from the opposition batsman all but sealed the victory. Julian Fernando claimed two wickets but was expensive conceding 40 off of his 3 overs and young Tom Russell bowled well but conditions were hard to bowl with especially with two batsman swinging non stop. Controversy struck when wicketkeeper Andrew Clarke had an opposition batsman seemingly run out but disgracefully not given out by their umpire.

The winning runs came off the bowling of Julian in the 12th over to seal in the end a comfortable 4 wicket victory for Foster Wheeler as every win is vital in their relegation battle. For Purley however, this result is only likely to delay their promotion party in the quest for Division 1 domination.
