Purley on Thames CC Presidents XI v Chairmans XI on Sun 07 Aug 2016 at 2pm
Purley on Thames CC Won by 1 wicket
Match report
On a sunny day the annual challenge match took place, the President’s XI, captained by Wilson Carlisle won the toss and elected to field. The now obligatory photos took place before both teams took up the challenge (photos can be found on the website and the Purley Facebook page). The Chairman’s captain, Patrick Allen decided to open the batting with Pahi and Nufail, whilst Robbie Jeffery and Chad Cudjoe took the new ball. The first over from Robbie seemed to be far too quick for both openers and it wasn’t surprising when Pahi skied a Robbie delivery and was caught. Chad kept plugging away at the other end and was unlucky not to get a wicket as several deliveries beat the edge of the bat. Jay Jones and Nufail then added 40 for the second wicket with a mixture of big hitting and quick singles, Chad finally got the wicket he deserved when he bowled Nufail for 15 and when Jay Jones lofted a cover drive to Dan Angell it was 81 for 3 after 16 overs. George Wheeler had hit 6 fours on route to 28 when he was brilliantly caught one-handed by Robbie Jeffery diving to his left at gully off the bowling of Dan Angell and it was 81 for 4. Pat Allen strode to the crease but was quickly dismissed as he played on a Simon Annetts swinger for 2 and when Andrew Clarke showed true sportsmanship as he walked, saving the umpire from making the decision, the Chairman’s XI were in trouble at 92 for 6. This brought together Arshad and Rifas and the two of them put on 76 in 11 overs as between them they hit one six and thirteen fours to take them to 177 at which point Rifas was bowled by Big Kev for 34, Arshad reached his fifty and not long afterwards he was well caught and bowled by Robbie when he returned for a second spell, the Chairman’s team were eventually all out for 183 in 33.4 overs with Simon Annetts 3 for 25 off 7 overs and Robbie Jeffery 3 for 29 off 6 overs the pick of the bowlers, although there were good spells from Chad, Jamie Elliott, Dan Angell, Richard Derbyshire, Tony Brown and Kevin Denton.
After tea, the President’s XI began the run chase as they opened with Wilson Carlisle and Kevin Denton, Wilson was quick to fall as he was caught at cover by Arshad off the bowling of Jimmy Coggs for 2, this brought Robbie out to the middle and began a partnership with Kevin that was to last 107 runs and 15 overs when finally Pat Allen made the breakthrough to bowl Kevin for 41 with the score on 113, this quickly became 124 for 4 off 23 overs as both Dan Angell and Richard Derbyshire were bowled by Junees and Pat respectively. Robbie brought up his fifty was a leg glance and with Chad batting well they took the score to 142, Chad received a low full toss and skied a catch to George Wheeler at short cover and they had lost their fifth wicket. A former Saturday 2nd XI captain, in the form of Harry Pickford was next in, the last time he held a bat was 16 years ago and he was very rusty and was unfortunate to play on off the bowling of George Wheeler and it was 146 for 6. Robbie was finally out caught behind by Andrew Clarke off the bowling of Arshad for a classy 84 with the score on 168, so with only 16 needed for the President and only 3 wickets needed for the Chairman the match was very much in the balance. Were Tony Brown, a former Saturday 1st XI captain and Dan Barclay going to see them home to victory? A four from Tony on his way to 9 before he was caught and when Simon Annetts got a beauty Arshad first up it was 180 for 9. Jamie Elliott survived a very loud LBW appeal on the hat-trick ball so it was left to Dan Barclay to hit the winning runs to see the President’s XI home by 1 wicket with 11 balls to spare. Arshad was pick of the bowlers with 3 for 22 and there were good figures from Pat Allen 2 for 28, Junees 2 for 30, Jimmy 1 for 20, George Wheeler 1 for 40.
The Chairman presented Wilson Carlisle with the trophy as the winning captain, the man of the match went to Robbie Jeffery for his 84, 3 wickets and two fantastic catches.
Thanks to Cecil Fright the President, Jeff Hinds the Chairman, the two umpires (Graham Watkins & Barry Carter), scorers (John Clarke and Laura) and everyone else who made the day enjoyable.
The challenge is on for Jeff to win back the trophy next year…
