Chairman’s report (Jeff Hinds)
1st Team finished 4th in Division 3a of the Thames Valley League
Special praises to Richard Sanford who averaged 63.5 from 7 games with a highest score of 56 in 3 50’s coupled with 6 catches and a stumping. Young Austyn Jackson was the 2nd highest average with the bat of 31.5 from 5 innings and capturing his first 5 wicket haul against Cove on the last day of the season. Patrick Allen had an average of 29.7 and a highest score of 84. Robbie Jeffreys took 30 wickets in the season, Andrew Jackson took 23 wickets and Patrick Allen bagged 20 wickets.
2nd Team finished 9th in Division 5b of the Thames Valley League and have been relegated. The promotion of the previous season proved to be perhaps a bit of a step too far or too early perhaps. Captain Peter Rackley worked tirelessly on the prospects of the team during the season. Tajpal Singh recorded 2 centuries and there were good introductions such as James Leach and Sam Harlow. Veteran Cyril Cox managed to take 17 wickets, Sam Woodhouse 22, Raj Senniappan 23 and Michael Coggs 13 wickets.
3rd Team Finished 9th in The Berkshire League of what has been another tough season but again some green shoots were evident with the performance of the youngsters coming through coupled with the presence of some senior players. Availability became stronger as the season drew to an end.
Midweek League Winners 2018 - Midweek Team finished 7th from 7 mainly due to poor availability. On a brighter note, the last two games were wins with more players being available for selection.
The Committee
I must comment on the work done by the Committee Members and I make particular reference to Barry Carter – Treasurer, Patrick Allen, Andrew Clarke & Martin Bishop – PR & Sponsorship, Ken Duggan – Adult Team Co-ordinator, and all the coaches who assist in working with the colts and some parents who give them support - fantastic work. We continue to appeal for more members on the playing side and parents, friends & acquaintance who may be able to give some time to assist with running of club activities.
Sponsorship & Fundraising
A special thank you to Patrick Allen for all he has achieved in this area on behalf of the club. The fundraising events such as the Snail Race Evening, Players Supper, Quiz Nights and Presentation Evening continue to be astutely organised and excellently compared by Ken Duggan.
Fixtures
Martin has done a very efficient job having taken over the role from Patrick Gee who has kept in touch.
Maintenance of the Ground
Chris Allen, Ken Duggan & Martin Bishop comes to mind and also the Coggs Family who are pretty much always available to assist. The dry conditions, endured nationwide, meant Chris Allen and his team were particularly outstanding in their upkeep of the ground this season thus maintaining the usual high standards at Purley on Thames CC.
Junior Section
A special mention should be made of the parents who have assisted Martin & Karen with the Junior Section. The introduction of the Girls’ Team is a fantastic achievement by Martin & Karen.
Chairman’s XI vs. The President’s XI
My XI was victorious and it was that our esteemed President Mr Cecil Freight was able to attend what was more of an inter-club occasion than in previous years. The game was re-scheduled after the initial July date was rained off.
Future
We look forward to the new season and encourage all to be on the lookout for players who may want to enjoy the fine club facilities and sporting qualities we are used to at Purley.
The proposed changes to the league structures will provide a new challenge but will hopefully create a greater appetite and will attract more people to the game.
On a personal note, it is, and has been, my pleasure to have served this club both as a player and a Chairperson and I am most grateful to all who make it such a nice club to belong to.
Secretary’s report (Karen Bishop on behalf of Paul Neal)
Paul reported that there had been regular monthly committee meetings throughout the year and that full sets of minutes had been taken and were available to members. Any correspondence, for example notification of league meetings, courses or advertising material, had been forwarded to the appropriate officers or members.
The only outstanding correspondence to be reported was that the Parish Council have sanctioned a picket fence to be erected next season, for the duration of the cricket season.
Treasurer’s report (Barry Carter)
We made an overall surplus for the year of £4282.12 which is a really healthy situation to be in.
The majority of the income categories showed an increase with match fees being the biggest contributor, mainly to do with the great summer we had which made for fewer matches being postponed and the diligence of all captains, coaches and managers who chased players for the match fees. Karen, as membership secretary, did a good job of collecting both adult and junior memberships which showed a £975 increase on the year before.
We received a £2000+ grant from the Good Exchange to run the junior section and also £750 from Shanley’s that went straight towards coaching after-school clubs; thanks to Martin & Karen for organising the grant and after-school clubs. There is still £1000 of this grant to be spent as the piece of equipment identified wasn’t available so will be spent next season and is ring-fenced.
The quiz evening was once again very well attended and supported and raised an additional £600 and, coupled with the snail racing evening which raised £400, made an additional £1000. Thanks to Patrick Allen for organising the two events. We don’t think we’re going to organise another snail race for the immediate future so if anyone has any new ideas for fund raising please speak with Patrick.
That brings our income to £22050.78, up from £19198.25 in 2016 / 2017.
Onto expenditure…
We spent £200 less on match day expenditure as a whole bringing it to £7506.78.
The affiliation fees were slightly up as we increased our insurance cover and we had to pay Berkshire affiliations this season too.
Equipment and Improvements were down from £3383.10 to £1577.08 as we didn’t need to spend as much on capital projects as we have done in the past couple of years. The increases came with a £200 new water heater for the refreshment room, £133 for two new benches for outside and other equipment such as scorebooks and items above our ground allowance.
We did spend a lot more on coaching courses but this included the Easter camp and development squad expenses which for some reason I lumped in all together this season whereby I didn’t last. The Easter camp and development squad are paid for by the invitees so make little, if any, loss to the club as a whole. There were several people that wanted to go on coaching courses, so these were paid for by the club.
Our total expenditure was £17768.66, down from £19811.84 in 2016 / 2017

Looking ahead to 2019, I don’t envisage any real expenditure other than the usual so this could be a year of saving for the next major project.
It is crucial we get another Sponsorship Manager to replace Patrick as this £1000 is important so that we can make all the improvements we need to make in relation to the ground and facilities so if you are able to make a difference then your chance will come later in the meeting. It would also be good if we can come up with something different to fund raise with other than the snail racing evening which we think has become a bit stale as the last two seasons have become poorly supported.
Reports from Captains (additional to Chairman’s report)
1st XI (Andrew Clarke)
A positive year, with new players, and a new identity.
2nd XI (Peter Rackley)
There is a real need to recruit additional players, as it is a struggle when 2nd XI players are taken to fill in for 1st team. This may be assisted with good progression for Junior players moving forwards, but that may be time consuming.
3rd XI
The lack of permanent captaincy was an issue and therefore the team struggled for consistency in players, sometimes needing to play juniors who were not yet suited.
There was a debate over moving the 3rd XI to the Thames Valley League in the future…
Sunday XI
The lack of permanent captaincy was an issue, and therefore the team struggled for consistency in players, sometimes needing to play juniors who were not yet suited and meant a great mixture in ability and age of players.
Peter kindly captained a number of games.
Midweek League
No report was available.
Indoor League (Patrick Allen)
The team finished second last season coming runners-up to Theale & Tilehurst. It is going well so far this season with 6 wins out of 6 games, and have only lost 7 wickets (to date).
Juniors
Overall it has been an excellent year with over 140 Junior Members in total.
AllStars was another great success with 40 participating.
All age groups, Under 9s to Under 17s, ran well.
Under 9s participated in Charley Cricket rules which was challenging for Coaches/Managers, children and parents!
Under 11s played 2 teams, 1 in Berkshire and 1 in Oxfordshire, plus Alan Olivier-Smith organised a tour for team-building with matches and watching a game at Bristol
Girls section launched successfully with around 20 participating, aged 8 – 14, and we fulfilled our league commitments.
We ran / hosted several cricket camps during holidays which all went well.
Our schools programme provided coaches into Purley, Long Lane, Downsway, Westward Farm, Pangbourne, Springfield and Denefield Schools strengthening the visibility and position as the leading club locally.
Junior Presentation Evening moved to a Friday in late July – seemed very successful and popular.
Big thank you to all Coaches, Managers, helpers and parents for making it all happen!
A Special thank you to Gavin Raw who is “retiring” after many years of coaching and running an age group.
At this point in the meeting a plea was made for more people (senior players and/or parents) to help with age group management and coaching if we are to maintain where we have reached and hopefully progress further – if anybody can get involved or know someone who can please contact Karen or Martin!
There also needs to be more connection between Adult & Junior sections moving forwards…
Proposals
Proposal 1 (from committee):
Any player who has not paid their annual subscription by 1st May will be expected to pay a £12 match fee, which includes a £4 excess, until such time as their membership is received. At that time, the excess paid will be credited to their membership fee. A lower rate may be charged for genuine stand-ins at the discretion of the committee or captain but the player will still need to fill in a temporary membership form for insurance purposes.
