Knowl Hill v Purley on Thames CC Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 13.30
Purley on Thames CC Won by 9 wickets
Match report
I could do a "Gary Brooker" and say that the skipper had a great day and was instrumental in this fantastic win. I won't though as it makes a change for me to even justify my place in the team!! I started well by winning the toss and putting them in on what looked a good batting track. Some tight early bowling from Khan and Vikram kept their scoring rate down, and we were subject to a few lbw decisions that didn't go our way, but it wasn't until Harry (1-22) came on that we got the first breakthrough. They were 60-1 in the 22nd over and I then bought on two young spinners, who both did a fantastic job, backed up by some good ground fielding from the whole team. George Clarke (9-3-30-2) got two crucial wickets to leave them 81-3. Sam bowled well and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Pahi came on and whilst we gave away a few too many runs in the last 4-5 overs he managed to take two wickets and we had two run outs, so they finished with 173-7 off their 45 overs. This was probably 20 runs more than our bowlers deserved. I then opened the innings with Khan, who set off in his usual "slow" fashion, hitting their opening bowler for 30 runs off his two overs. We raced to 69-0 in the 11th over, before Khan was bowled for 44. Pahi came in and carried on where Khan left off, and with me hitting the odd boundary we set about our target. Our partnership reached 108 in the 37th over when Pahi hit a four to take his innings to 63no and win the game. I finished with my first ever 50 for Purley with 58no. A great 9 wicket win against one of our rivals for a top 4 spot, and considering we had 5 under 16's, 3 old codgers, plus Pahi, Vikram and Khan we didn't do too bad as a team!!
