Match report
Purley midweek back to winning ways after the skipper wields the axe
Purleys mid week team got back to winning ways over at the reading uni on tuesday night with a good win over the bg group. In a much changed team
the evening started well when the skipper turned up to see most of his team out on the ground warming up with alex clough leading the warm up.
The mood was sombre over recent events, especially when it was announced that the skipper had left out club batting sensation Pat Allen after a poor 3
the previous week claiming no man was to big for the club!
BG group batted first and the skip started with Alex Clough and Cyril Cox bowling excellently trying to keep their places and they held the BG group to a mere 22 from six overs slowly picking through their batsmen . slowly but surely the confidence came back to the team with the skipper leading the charge and when Barry Carter (also fighting for his place in the midweek team) ran out a useful batsmen with a great throw the writing was on the wall. Wickets followed with Carter taking 2 and young Robert Clarke and Kieron Barret one apiece well done also andrew clarke with yet another great wicket keeping display .
The skipper having enginered a tactical field then sent in some youth with some experience to bat with a calming voice not to panic and the first two responded well . Things got a little dicey when Purley lost Khan Azid and Alex Clough for 8 and 5 , but the skipper with a few eyebrows being raised promtley sent in Pat Allens replacement, Robert Clarke stating there was no panic its business as usual.
Clarke responded to his skippers faith in him and with instructions to stay there and see it out he duly rose to the occasion backed up well by the rejuvinated George Wheeler ( how good it is to see him back ) this win takes Purley back to the top of the league at the half way point in the season and looking good for the championship . This weeks man of the match was a real hard call but i have decided to give it to robert clarke for his cool batting in a minor crisis, closely followed by the skipper for his cool calm and calculated decisions on the pitch and off with the team selection
well done to all
thanks
