Match report
Purley are beaten again!
Purley Midweek team suffered another shock defeat at the hands of Verizon at the Reading University.
After beating them quite well at home with strong performances from the youth of Callam Wood, Andrew Clarke, Joe Murphy and Tom Russell the skipper spent most of the weekend trying to get a team together due to holidays and youth matches .
So Purley fielded and the ever fresh Cyril Cox bowled fantastically all night and took a couple of wickets with the skipper taking another great catch to aid him. Khan Azards arm was tested many times by the home team and it cost them as he threw pin point bullets straight to "stand in" (VILLAGE STANDARD NOVICE!)wicket keeper Paul Reber to run a couple of them out. Jefferson Hinds chipped in with a great wicket (cheese on bread) bowling out a useful no 3 and rebes got the other wicket after the skipp took yet another catch.
I must say the fielding was really good led by the new signing John Clarke sick of seeing his sons and his wife taking all the glory and deciding to get involved with some magical (more like Debbieeeeeeeee Magee than Paul Daniels) fielding at fine leg and gully helping Purley keep them to a reasonable 150 (thanks john).
So purley went in to bat and thats were it all went wrong ??????????!!!!!!!!! the skipper having total faith in his batting line up elected to put himself down the order to give some of the others a go and they responded with chaos - losing Pat Daniels after the 3rd ball .
The skipp then sent in Khan Azard with instructions to calm it for an over or so. WHAT A DISASTER THAT WAS with Reber shouting for a single and Khan stood wondering why he had shouted only to left well short of the crease and run out on the 5th ball of the night (VILLAGE!).
Ramesh then went for 1 followed closely by George Wheeler 2 and Jefferson Hinds for 0, total disaray and with 5 wickets down with only 11 runs on the board the skipper not in the best of moods at all walked to the crease carrying Purley on Thames midweek cricket club firmly on his shoulders STILL having to face the opening pace attack!
A meeting was called by the skipper in the middle with Paul Reber where he told the young novice that he was to stay there for a couple of overs come what may THINKING this could have been the worst defeat ever by a Purley team the skipper then took a guard of middle stump and proceeded to take some huge strides to block the remaining 4 balls of the over. Huge relief could be heard from the stands with the skippers wife and kids leading the applause. The skipper then set about trying to just stay there for a few overs and back up Paul Reber always counting who was at what end and how many balls left whether to block or nick a single only on loose bowling. There was no way the skipper was going to let his team be trenched and in the end with a great performance with the bat the team ended up with 109.
Thanks to all the veterens for turning out for the club it was great to see you all out there. After very carefull consideration and with the thoughts that Reber got a real good 63 (if agricultural-compared to the skip) the man of the match went to the skipper Gary Brooker for carrying the clubs mid week team on his shoulders with the bat to stop a total whipping and most probably the worst defeat ever by a Purley cricket club (blushes saved but a check of club records show that skip need only have worried briefly - lowest ever score 17 all out vs Emmer Green (at Purley) on the 21st April 1974).
thanks to all
