Purley on Thames CC Sunday XI v Shinfield on Sun 10 Jul 2011 at 2pm
Purley on Thames CC Won by 202 runs
Match report
The skipper won the toss for the third successive time and decided to bat on a flat track. Pete Rackley and James Measham quickly took control as James reached his 50 off only 52 balls. Pete took the much needed stalwart role to move seamlessly to 35. James then fell for 65 as he top edged a pie that soared to the wicket keeper when the score had reached 112. Luke Flory played a few cameo shots but was bowled by another pie (Steak and Kidney) for 5 and when Alistair Baxter played on things were looking unsteady at 129 for 3. Debutants George Wheeler and Dave Lincoln then set about the Shinfield attack and put on 105 for the fifth wicket before Dave Lincoln was caught on the long off boundary for 41 and then moments later George attempted a similar shot and was caught for a great 65. Brothers Andrew and Robert Clarke played out the rest of the innings with Andrew finishing on 4 not out and Robert on 2 not out as we ended on 266 for 5 off 40 overs.
Shinfield got off to the worst possible start as Dave Lincoln steamed in from the Pangbourne end to bowl Patrick Stewart for 0. A fantastic throw by Luke Flory saw the end of the other Shinfield opener, which was a key wicket and Shinfield found themselves 18 for 2.Harry Bell found some inspired bowling form and removed three batsman in the space of two overs to reduce them to 24 for 5.One of the wickets was the result of a truly breathtaking catch by the skipper Barry Carter at mid on (well ok it was a dolly but after the fiasco on the Saturday any catch would be breathataking). The skipper made the inspirational decision to introduce Robert Clarke into the attack and was immediately rewarded with a wicket which was pouched at point by Luke Flory. Young spinner George Clarke finally got his much deserved first adult wicket as Pete Rackley caught a looping ball at first slip and when the Shinfield captain was trapped lbw by the youngster for 1 it was all over and Purley on Thames had won by 202 runs as Shinfield were all out for 64 in 23.1 overs.Well done lads and in the spirit of other match reports the man of the match was the skipper!
