Blewbury & Upton v Purley on Thames CC Sunday XI on Sun 24 Jun 2012 at 2pm
Purley on Thames CC Won by two wickets
Match report
Purley on Thames Sunday 2nds travelled through deep puddles to the lovely ground of Blewbury with a team that included 7 U18's. The wicket was deemed unfit to play so we ended up on the artificial wicket. The Purley skipper lost yet another toss and Blewbury elected to bat and that decision soon became apparent as the fourth ball of the day was hit for 4. Tom Russell made a breakthrough as he had Wagner caught by Conner Farmery for 8.After an hours delay due to a heavy rainstorm Blewbury then had a stand of 83 before Callum Wood enticed Barrett to slice the ball to Bilal Hasan in the gulley.Allen was then brilliantly caught by young Robert Clarke running in from the mid-wicket boundary for 6 and Blewbury were 118 for 3. George Clarke chipped in with the important wicket of Thwaits as his leg-spin finally deceived in when he was on 70 and then the next ball caught and bowled Strange. Sam Woodhouse finally got some reward with the last wicket as Blewbury declared on 188 for 6. Purley were soon in trouble as they lost both Pete Rackley for 1 and Callum Wood for 4 to leave them 8 for 2 but Bilal Hasan and Conner put on 30 for the third wicket. Max Baker-Smith and Bilal continued to plug away, Max showed some good touches in a great knock of 22 before he attempted a big hit and was caught. Bilal was finally out for 39 (his highest score for Purley) and it looked grim as we were 70 for 4 but the experience of Andy Stephens and a cameo innings by young George Clarke which included a towering six over square leg saw Purley to within 1 run of victory when George was out for 27 his highest adult score. Sam Woodhouse ran out to the middle as time was of the essence and knocked off the winning run which left Andy 41 not out and Purley victorious by 2 wickets and with 3 minutes to spare. A thoroughly good game and thanks to Blewbury for agreeing to play the game when it could have so easily been called off. A fantastic performance from a very young team, all bodes well for the future!
