Match report Purley on Thames Saturday 2nd XI travelled the relatively short distance to Hurst for their latest Thames Valley league division 5A match. After a minutes silence for Ray Day, coach, player and umpire who had passed away suddenly during the week was impeccably observed Purley batted first. Gautham Kamath and James Measham started briskley and had put on 77 for the first wicket in just 17 overs when Gautham was LBW for 46. Mazhar Farooq and James then set about the Hurst attack and a declaration looked on the cards but once Mazhar (73) and then James 101 were out in successive overs a declaration became unlikely as we struggled to hit quick runs . After 52 overs we had scored 289 for 6, a challenging total for Hurst to chase in 48 overs and they never really went for it as R.Head and T.Walker put on 181 for the second wicket to finish on 210 for 2 from their 48 overs, if they had decided to go for it from the beginning rather than settle for just 8 points it would have been an interesting finale but their negative approach rendered the last 20 overs pointless.
