Purley on Thames CC Sunday XI v Lower Earley on Sun 02 Jun 2013 at 1400
Purley on Thames CC Won by 67 runs
Match report
Purley on Thames Sunday XI entertained Lower Earley in their first match of the Millennium League. Lower Earley won the toss and elected to field on a rather green looking track. Pete Rackley was first out for 8 when he was bowled by an inswinging yorker. Max Baker-Smith was looking in good form and had reached 10 when he was called for a second run after the ball was hit towards the long on boundary but a superb throw from the boundary was a direct hit, Max was the first of four Purley batsmen run out. George Wheeler tried to push the run rate along but he mistimed a shot and was well caught at mid wicket for 33. George Clarke then hung around to make 18 valuable runs before he became the fourth and final player to be run out. Purley were finally all out for 133 off 38.4 overs. After the usual decent tea, Purley set about their task well with George Wheeler taking three wickets in his first three overs and when Vikram Kamath bowled the dangerous Chowdery, Lower Earley were in trouble at 29 for 4. George struck twice more in his fifth over to reduce Lower Earley to just 30 for 6. Robert Clarke and Clive Kent both bowled really well to remove the final four batsmen which included a fine catch at mid on by the skipper Barry Carter. The match was finally won when Clive Kent trapped Richie Harwood LBW for 5 and Lower Earley were all out for 66. A fine man of the match performance once again by George "Howarb" Wheeler.
