Purley on Thames CC Sunday XI v Wokingham Chestnuts on Sun 01 Sep 2013 at 1330
Purley on Thames CC Won by 2 runs
Match report
Purley on Thames boosted their chances of regaining the Millennium Sunday League championship with a narrow and hard-fought 2 run victory over Wokingham Chestnuts at Goosecroft. Purley skipper, Barry Carter won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that had produced 500 runs the day before. Openers James Measham and George Wheeler started slowly but got into gear and George was soon hitting the Wokingham bowling to all parts of the boundary.George Wheeler was dropped on the mid-wicket boundary on 98 but made no mistake next ball as he hit a four to reach his fourth 100 of the season. George was finally out for 143 in a Purley record opening stand of 282 which eclipsed the record only set one day before by Kevin Denton and Robert Clarke. James made his 100 in the 39th over whilst Kieran Barrett came in and hit 3 not out as Purley closed their innings on 290 for 1 off 40 overs. After a tea that was described as the best one in a long time Wokingham set about the total with some flourish as they piled on 80 off the first 10 overs. It took a smart piece of keeping by Kieran Barrett to hold onto a low catch off the bowling of Chris Rackley to end that partnership. At 20 overs Wokingham were well up with the required run rate at 146 for 1 but it took the introduction of centurion, George Wheeler to swing the balance back in Purley's favour as he removed Akuressan for 62 to a good slip catch by Chris and then Iyer to a skier at square leg catch by Cyril Cox. Wokingham youngster Jake Clare then set about the attack but when he was out they needed 10 off the last over and they fell just two runs short as Purley skipper, Barry Carter held his nerve to bowl a decent over in the fading light.
