Match report
After a struggle to get 11 players the 3rds got back on track with a great performance against Crowthorne, who themselves only had 10 players. The skipper lost the toss and we were put in on a lovely warm day (miracle!). After the fall of some early wickets it was not looking good at 58-4. However, 15yr old James Denton came to the crease to join the skipper. Last weekend he got a "king pair" so was understandably nervous, but it didn't show as the partnership grew to 113 before the skipper was out for his highest ever score of 77. James then flourished and played some lovely shots. Him and another 15yr old James Mugford (11) put on 40 quick runs to take our score to 220-7. James Denton finished with a superb 81 not out. A much improved Ibis tea was taken, and the skipper asked his bowlers and fielders to show a marked improvement in their concession of extras and catching. One of the Crowthorne openers started very positively until the skipper set an example taking a high catch off the bowling of Rob Holman. We then had them 56-4 in the 15th over. They decided to shut up shop and we had to show a lot of patience. They added 16 runs in the next 18 overs before Nufail came back and had the opener LBW. All the bowlers bowled well with Kevin Denton taking 2 wickets for no runs in his first 6 overs. Rob Holman came back on as the skipper was getting anxious that we would run out of overs. He then claimed the last 2 wickets to get his 5-41, and we bowled them out for 98 in the 43rd over. A very patient and much improved performance in the field and we reaped the rewards with a maximum 35 point haul. A special mention to James Denton, not only did he score a brilliant 81no but he kept wicket for 43 overs and did a superb job. I'm sure his Dad was extremely proud, but it was also a joy for me as well, as I have coached and managed James since he was 7. We look forward to next week's game at Emmbrook & Bearwood with renewed confidence. Well done to all my team today.
