Purley on Thames CC Midweek v Reading East on Wed 19 Jun 2013 at 1800
Purley on Thames CC Won by 36 runs
Match report
On a muggy and humid evening at the Goosecroft, George Clarke took charge of the Midweek XI to face Reading East. The skipper won the toss and elected to bat. The two 'Daves' - Dave Lincoln and Robert Clarke - opened the batting and put on a solid partnership of 34 before a mix up between the wickets led to Robert's departure. Dave Lincoln continued the Potters charge with some clean hitting before holing out on the short deep square leg boundary for an impressive 44. George Wheeler then joined Robbie Jeffery at the crease but failed to capitalise on the short boundary and true bounce of the new astroturf strip and was caught for 14. The skipper, promoted to number 5, then came in and followed by Robbie's example as the under 17 pair put on an unbeaten partnership of 72 including some lusty blows from both players. George Clarke finished on a career best 33 not out and Robbie Jeffery on 48 not out.
Purley then took to the field with the seemingly easy task of defending 171 against a young Reading East side. The experience of Cyril Cox got the breakthrough in the fourth over with a fine catch by Dave Lincoln at point. Barry Carter followed suit, taking the wicket of Zaf for just 1 thanks to a well held catch at long off by the skipper. A calmly conducted run out by Robert Clarke claimed the next wicket. Pat Allen was then handed the ball and took 2 wickets in his first over, 1 of which a well flighted ball that beat Bilal's bat and smart work from Heslop dismissed the batsman for 15. Allen finished with figures of 3-22 having made the most of a non-turning pitch. Wheeler then entered the attack to claim the 7th wicket as Reading East finished on 145-7 from their 13 overs.
A positive start to George's reign as Midweek captain and a welcome victory for the Potters following 4 cancellations.
