Purley on Thames CC Midweek v Microsoft on Wed 26 Jun 2013 at 1800
Purley on Thames CC Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Purley Midweek XI came out on top of Microsoft in a tense match that finished in fading light.
The skipper in his second game in charge lost the toss as the home side were invited to take to the field. The Midweek destroyer Cyril Cox claimed the first 4 wickets, all caught by Clarke brothers - most notably the opener Chase when he holed out to George Clarke at long off for a sturdy 41. The captain then took the ball and got the next wicket caught at cover by twin brother Robert. It was now the turn of Clive Kent as he entered the attack and took 3 wickets in as many balls for his first ever hat-trick in a fantastic spell of 3-0-18-4. The final wicket was earned through a run out by the captain off his own bowling as Microsoft finished on 111 all out thanks to a good fielding performance and some outstanding individual bowling by Clive and Cyril.
Robbie Jeffery and Andrew Clarke opened the batting but a combined score of 1 between both batsmen got Purley off to a disappointing start. An ever-reliable Reeber took to the crease with the task of solidifying the Purley innings and did so superbly to finish on an unbeaten half century. Kieran Barrett (14) and Robert Clarke (16) supported him well with some good hitting but failed to see the game off. The following wicket of promising young wicketkeeper Matt Heslop for 1 left Purley needing 18 runs to win from 20 balls. George Wheeler and George Clarke were promoted in a formerly mixed-up batting order to try and seal the victory. But when Wheeler was bowled for just 4, it was up to the skipper to finish it off. With 8 runs needed from the last 7 balls, 2 singles were followed by the first and only 6 of the innings from George Clarke to clinch the win with just 4 balls to spare.
A good win for the Midweek team and a prime example of how to chase a total from start to finish making it 3 wins on the bounce. Long may it continue.
