Theale & Tilehurst v Purley on Thames CC Sunday XI on Sun 18 Aug 2013 at 1330
Purley on Thames CC Lost by 27 runs
Match report
Purley on Thames took a youthful looking team that included eight under 21s to Theale & Tilehurst for a 40 over friendly match. Purley skipper, Barry Carter won the toss and elected to field and it seemed to be justified when Nufail struck an early blow by bowling James Codd for 4 and then Alan Why for 8. Theale & Tilehurst continued to lose regular wickets as Miraq on debut bowled well to end with 2 for 35 off 8 overs. Ashley Hillier also bowled well and was rewarded by picking up the wickets of Manoj for 50 and Killsby-Steele for a duck. It was only when skipper, Rob Dimmack came in to bat did the game drift away from Purley as he hit a rapid 57 not out so that Theale & Tilehurst finished on 217 for 6 off 40 overs. Purley got off to a reasonable start as Ashley Hillier hit three fours but he was finally bowled by the nagging length of Stuart Brown for 18, fellow opener Adam Mugford was smartly caught at mid off by Jamal Malik for 11 and when the two James' (Mugford and Denton) followed quickly Purley were in deep trouble at 47 for 4 but brilliant batting by Dan Barclay and Nufail raised hopes of an impossible win by putting on 68 for the fifith wicket when Nufail was run out by a good piece of fielding for 31. Dan Barclay clipped one behind to Michael Holder and was out for a season highest score of 59 and we were 144 for 6. A few lusty blows by Matt Heslop, Oli Chatwin and Jack Mundell took Purley to 189 for 9 when Barry Carter was bowled for 8 to leave us just 27 runs short of Theale & Tilehurst's score. A fantastic performance by everyone whch was played in a sporting manner with some good banter being exchanged between the two teams.
