Purley on Thames CC Saturday 3rd XI v Warfield on Sat 29 Aug 2015 at 1300
Purley on Thames CC Won By 3 wickets
Match report
The last game of the season and any two from the top 5 could still be promoted, although whoever won our game was practically assured of promotion, so it was a shoot-out. The skipper won the toss and decided to put them in given that we had to win the game to stand any chance of promotion. The opening spell from Pahi and Junees put them under pressure immediately. Junees bowled his 10 overs straight through and only conceded 12 runs and took one wicket. This gave the boys confidence and we fielded superbly again, taking our catches and Rifas with two run-outs were very sharp pieces of fielding. Nufail and Sharaf bowled well, and 15 year old Jordan Murray-Robertson, playing his first game for Saturday 3rds, took one wicket in his 5 overs, and showed great promise. Pahi came back to take the last wicket in the 45th over, bowling the top scorer Morris for 37. We did a fantastic job in restricting them to 150 all out, and so the first half of the job was complete. We started our chase poorly, losing openers Gavin and Nufail cheaply. However, Asif and Kevin Denton steadied the ship, until Asif was out for 20 with the score on 41. Rifas and Kevin put on 31 before Rifas was out for 10. It then became 73-5, and 101-6, and then 117-7, before the skipper joined Kevin at the crease. Nervous times with 34 to win and 3 wickets remaining. However, the skipper got to 18no before Kevin scored the winning runs to reach 74no and a match-winning AND promotion-winning performance! A fantastic achievement for the boys, as 3 weeks ago we were 5th in the league, and had 3 of the top 4 left to play against. We won all 3 of those games, so fully deserved the reward of promotion to Division 2. Two promotions in 3 seasons for the boys is a brilliant achievement, and we look forward to Division 2 next season. I could not have wished for a better end to the season, which has been very tough at times, but all in all, a most enjoyable one. Everyone that has played for the Saturdays 3rds this season deserves a huge pat on the back from the skipper. Thanks to all of you.
