Purley on Thames CC Sunday XI v President's XI v Chairman's XI (Club Day) on Sun 09 Aug 2015 at 1400
Purley on Thames CC Won by the Chairman's XI by 73 runs
Match report
It was the annual challenge match between the President’s XI and the Chairman’s XI at Goosecroft on Sunday 9th August 2015. The teams were selected by the respective officers some of whom were ex-Purley players, others guests but the majority were current members.
The Chairman, Jeff Hinds won the toss and elected to bat on a really hot day, a decision that seemed a little like the Australian decision at Edgbaston as they lost both openers Kevin Denton and Adam Mugford with only 28 on the board. Kevin was caught at the wicket by Luke Fifield off the bowling of his son, James (I’m sure there hasn’t been any ribbing over that in the Denton household ) for 7 and then Adam was bowled by James for 7. This brought together Andrew Clarke (Sunday XI captain) and Jay Jones (ex- Saturday 1st captain) and although it took Jay a bit of time to get back into the swing of things he soon got into the groove before he was finally caught by Alan Schofield for 48 when the score was on 160. Andrew made it to 102 off 59 balls before he retired. There followed brief cameos from Pahi who was brilliantly caught by Mark Allum on the cow corner boundary for 17, Rifaz (44) and a storming 28 not out by the Chairman to bring the total to a challenging 279 for 6 off 35 overs. James Denton was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 46 off his 7 overs, whilst Will Allum picked up two wickets and Richard Derbyshire one. The two teams then left the field to tuck into tea.
The umpires, Graham Watkins and Ken Duggan made their way to the wicket as the President’s XI began their run chase, they needed 280 runs at 8 runs per over.
Will Allum and Wilson Carlisle got off to a flyer as they scored 37 runs off the first 5 overs as they took a liking to the Chairman’s opening bowlers of Callum Wood and Barry Carter so they were only slightly behind on the run rate but with the only half-decent ball Barry Carter bowled in his spell he found an outside edge of Will’s bat and Dan Barclay snaffled it fantastically and he was out for a quick fire 31. This brought James Denton to the crease and he continued with the bat as he did with the ball as he reached 52 in no time at all before he was well caught by Jay Jones at deep square leg with the score on 152 off 25 overs. Wilson at the other end batted superbly for his 52 before he was trapped LBW by Jeff Hinds attempting a reverse sweep and when Alan Schofield (ex-Saturday 1st captain) was caught one-handed in the slips by Kevin Denton for 2 they had been reduced to 155 for 4. Lindsey Maskell (another ex-Saturday 1st XI captain) guided an on drive to the boundary for 4 but the next ball he was bowled by Pahi for 4 and any hope of a President’s XI victory was surely over. Alex Duggan batted well for his 9 before Pahi also bowled him so it was left to Mark Nash to take up the mantle as he hit three sixes in his 29 runs off 19 deliveries before he was eighth out in the last over thanks to a good catch at wide mid-on by Callum Wood with the score on 203. Luke Fifield hit a couple more runs to end 8 not out as they finished on 206 for 8 in their 35 overs, 73 runs short.
The President congratulated the Chairman on the victory and stated that it was his challenge for 2016 to win the trophy back.
