Purley on Thames CC Won by 3 Wickets
Match report
On Saturday 21st, the Potters third team outfit traveled across town to our easterly neighbours of Woodley CC 2nd XI. Woodford Park greeted with a rock hard green top alongside a packet of fags and a few cans of Stella, the joys of a public park cricket fixture were plain to see. The likelihood of the match going ahead was slim-to-none due to heavy forecasts but lucky for us cricket matches are decided pre-match by the met office. As we trudged out for the toss, Skip retained his 100% toss win record and decided to insert the home side. Starting strongly the home side began accumulating 21-0 off the first 3 overs although some economical bowling from wiley left-armer Junees clawed the the run rate almost to a hault with the hosts reaching 66-1 off 15. Some smart bowling from man-of-the-moment Nufail a taking a quick two wickets and Sammy Woodhouse tied down an end with a steady flurry of wickets, finishing the innings with a 4-for. Woodley continued in the rain in an aggressive fashion but the constant fall of wickets meant they fell 4 overs short of their allocation ending up getting bowled out for 183. With heavy down pour during the interval and getting dangerously close to an abandoned match, the Potters trudged out on what still looked a good wicket, with Skipper Barrett leading out his men from the top. Starting positively, skip and woody fell early and led to Nufail and Pahi coming in to steady the ship. I don't think I've ever seen a ship being steadied through charging down the wicket to the opening bowler but Pahi managed it somehow. I feel this could have been also credited to Woodley's poor display in the field dropping numerous catches and Nufail made them pay. Some aggressive batting and Nufail passed 50 and put the Potters in a solid position to win the match, albeit weather permitting. With Nufail passing 50 he fell short of back to back centuries with a superb 74, chipping another one of the infamous UP's pie's to extra cover. UP continued his assault throwing down more grenades enticing the Potter's batsman to fall victim to the big shot. In came keeper batsman Mugford, with Skip masterfully dropping him a slot in the order down to 8, just in case there was another infamous Purley collapse, and of course there was. Junees and A. Mugford to the wicket at 132-7 still another 50 required but a lot of time left in the game, again weather permitting. With Junees playing a secondary role to Mugford's more aggressive approach coupled with a defence Slaven Bilic would be proud of, the boys sailed the ship to victory with another 29* for the keeper-batsman, this alongside the Iron's securing Europa League football, safe to say a pleasant evening in the Mugford household Saturday night. Before the boundary rope could be brought in, sheer downpour unleashed on the ground, just after we'd secured victory. Great timing from the weather, the same couldn't be said about the Potters captain unfortunately.
