Match report
On an cloudy afternoon down Scours Lane the Potters were reeling after a few extremely poor performances and a couple of selection nightmares leaving us beginning the game with only 10 soldiers going into the match. Opposing gaffer Razaq elected to field in overcast conditions – our recent form may have had something to do with this. Skipper Barrett dropped down the order to fulfil keeping duties as the experienced A.Mugford had been summoned to the holy grail of the Second XI. Sending in big hitting Tejpal and Rizvi paid off with a flurry of boundaries starting the innings off strongly. If only the same could be said off the field as Barrett scrambled for a scorer, Pahi stepped up providing a quick-stop scoring seminar for fast bowler in-chief Harry Bell. This could turn out to be a master stroke by the skip.
The heavy scoring continued as Nufail compiled the misery with the Potters reaching 120-3 in the 20th over. The boundaries continued to flow with Nufail hitting the biggest of the day cannoning over the IBIS – fortunately no Weddings were interrupted today. Nufail fell just after reaching a half century and it was left to Rifas and skip to steady the ship and continue pummelling the boundary rope and how they did. A 60-run 8 over partnership glittered with stroke-play and hacks across the line scrambled the boys to 249-5 off their allocation.
A somewhat quiet atmosphere at tea as only 7 of us tucked in with Ramadan in full-swing but a guest appearance from Purley’s Becky Clarke, fresh from her trial shift at McVitie’s helped encourage conversation amongst the Purley elite. The 10 men of Purley were treated to the treat of the day when saviour Pat Daniels made an appearance to give the Potters a full 11 whilst fielding.
Back out and ready to rumble, Skip as keen as ever to go out and field, this may or may not have been linked to England’s opening group game kicking off at 8 o’clock! Skip behind the stumps for the first time since his junior days successfully dropped everything from Harry Bell’s first over, must have been watching the Bairstow masterclass session on at lunch at Lord’s. But low and behold a thick edge to about 3rd slip, he pounced across the turf and pouched it a la David Seaman. Euphoria. Junees offered some masterful control and got the early break through as West Reading fell to 20-3 before the 7th over. Junees showed even while fasting he maintained rocket fuel in his boots and along with Bell bowled their full complement without interuption. After 20 overs of high class swing bowled the visitors were reduced to 40-8 before Jimmy Coggs was asked to get loose. Showing great control him and King Jefferson bowled accurately to remove the final two West Reading batsman and wrap up the game inside 26 overs with a statement 160 run victory. The less said about Pahi’s 2 overs 0-28 the better I think.
Overall it wrapped up a good afternoon’s work for Purley with everyone from the side contributing and even got back before kick-off. Barrett is now taking an extended two-week break after experiencing high blood pressure from appealing too much off Harry Bell’s bowling.
Cheers boys.
