Purley on Thames CC Won By 5 wickets

Match report Powerful Purley make Falkland falter on home soil

Skipper Paul Reber won the toss and controversially decided to bowl first on a belter of a batting wicket. Falkland were out of the blocks like Usain Bolt as they raced to 100 runs off the first ten over’s. Part time bowlers Paul Reber and Patrick Allen pinned back Falklands superstars with some tight bowling. Reber claimed 3-50 off his 9 over’s with Allen chipping in with 1-39. Falklands youthful side described by an onlooker as “the strongest side they have put out in 2 years” set an impressive target of 290 for 6 off their 42 over’s.

Further questions were raised of Reber’s decision to bowl first as the team sat down to a delightful tea and contemplated the daunting run chase. Hopes of an inexperienced Falkland bowling attack was short lived as their pacey opening bowler Joel Martin pinned Gautum Kamath in the helmet with the first ball of the innings. Purley openers Kamath and James Measham got off to a healthy start before Purley were set back by the two quick wickets of Kamath and Purleys young shaver Chris Rackley who received a questionable umpiring decision. Measham was joined at the wicket by the ever fashion conscious skipper Paul Reber who showed his bravery opting not to wear a helmet to the rapid short pitched bowling of Martin while also battling a savage hangover. Measham and Reber set about rebuilding the Purley innings before Measham parted for a useful contribution of 32. Prolific Patrick Allen looked confident as he strolled out to the middle under the watchful eye of Berkshire 1st team manager David Morris. Allen’s intentions were clear as he unleashed hell on Falklands former Berkshire youth star, David Bloor, dispatching 4 of his first 5 balls to the boundary. Reber and Allen took to the Falkland attack like ducks to water, raising hopes of a formerly unthinkable Purley victory. The two Purley stars crafted an impressive partnership of 180 runs to put Purley in serious contention. Reber’s superb innings of 72 came to end when he was bowled by Falkland skipper Stephenson. Allen continued the onslaught, as he smashed an incredible 143 before Stephenson’s persistence finally paid off and he claimed his wicket, caught and bowled. Purley were left needing 7 off the final over and were guided home by the calm and collected Dan Barclay and Dave Peddle. The demoralised Falkland players looked drained as they left the pitch, leaving the jubilant Purley celebrating an historic win.
